Wanting to incorporate color back into your home now that it’s “in style” again? Read this first.
It’s official. According to ELLE decor, Homepolish, The New Daily and more, color is making its comeback. While I’m excited my clients and peers will be eager to experiment with color again— au revoir stark white rooms—I’m sad that anyone ever felt color had left at all! Color is in our identity and, when we treat it as such, it grows to be much more than just a fleeting trend.
Color has been an intrinsic part of Turnstyle since its founding. We believe color is in our human nature, a sixth sense, an instinct. Color is able to take us to places we faintly remember, as well as to the most vibrant memories that we hold dear. Incorporating color into your home is no easy feat but, if done correctly, it is the perfect way to symbolize who you are, where you came from and what you relate to.
You simply can’t grow tired of the free associations, or nostalgia one has to color. Your own personality or inherent feelings—all of the things color is able to emote.
When I think about examples to showcase this way of thinking, two previous projects come to mind:
This is the home of a transplant couple from the Bay Area ready to settle into a more balanced life.
Our goal was to set a heartfelt, artistic tone in the home, as the husband is a fine artist. With an extensive art collection on hand, we emphasized the vibrancy of said collection and custom built everything to accommodate the proper display and experience of those beautiful pieces.
We created a dynamic and welcoming path for anyone’s arrival, allowing the homeowners to also find themselves easily surrounded and inspired by what they loved. Color and pattern were at the center of this effort to highlight and showcase an ease of living with such an incredible collection. The vitality is something they have loved and something they have since continued throughout their home, now feeling they have connected to color in a more thoughtful way.
Bringing together their personal collections of artwork with our warm and exotic vision for their entry library, we created a head-turning, dynamic space built for guests and visitors.
A Vibrant Craft Room for a Young Artist:
This particular space, solely dedicated to the creativity of the artist it was designed for, purposefully encourages interaction, ponderance and the limitless possibility of boundaries put asunder by our bold shapes and hues. It’s precisely the use of color that makes the space engaging and participatory. And because here nothing was off-limits to ensure a playful space, we could push the envelope on where such vitality might turn up; hand-painting the floors to encourage more free-creativity and textures to touch all five of the sense. With everything customized to that experience, the opportunities for great - and connected - experiences ahead are endless.
Remember: You have to start somewhere. Take the risk. It’s only paint, it can come off!
In the end, you want your home to reflect the aspirations you have and the lifestyle you hope to achieve. Incorporating color into your home can’t be just your way of keeping up with the trends. It has to mean something to you.
Ask yourself: “How do I want to feel in my space everyday?” If you’re a minimalist, in other words white walls and decor are part of your DNA, stay with what you know—chances are, you enjoyed that design before it was a trend, as well. But if you want alignment to the seeming dynamism of 2018, follow along on all of Turnstyle’s adventures to see how your space can be revamped into a glorious, personal treat.
